Bridging the Digital Divide:
My interests are in networked systems research and the social aspects of information technology, particularly with respect to developing software and hardware infrastructure appropriate to communities in emerging regions. My current focus in this area is on healthcare delivery and information systems. For more information and related research, see my Survey of Projects on ICT for Developing Regions and my Guide to ICT4D Research at Berkeley

Current Research:
Tijuana Computer Network Deployment
Routing in Delay Tolerant Networks
The DTN Train: Delay Tolerant Networking for Sensor Networks
World Income Distribution and Poverty

Projects
Delay Tolerant Networking Research Group (DTNRG)
DTN addresses architectural and protocol design principles for challenged networks, in which end-to-end connectivity cannot be assumed. Examples include ad-hoc sensor networks, mobile tactical networks, Interplanetary Internet, and the use of access-point-enabled buses to provide rural Internet connectivity.
Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions (TIER)
The TIER group is the technology arm of the Information and Communications Technology for Billions (ICT4B) research project at UC Berkeley. This multi-disciplinary collaboration with Intel Research, Berkeley seeks to develop hardware and software infrastructure appropriate to developing regions at low cost.
